RBW Plastics Recycling Program
In 2023, RBW received a circular economy grant from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to start recycling contaminated plastic waste produced by Western Canada’s Resource Extraction Industries to produce clean new Alberta-made products. RBW started making curb stops and picnic tables in Edmonton (please see the attached flyers). This operation created 3 local jobs and has the environmental equivalent of removing 127 passenger vehicles from Alberta roads per year. The curb stops are more sustainable, easier to install and more cost effective than concrete and rubber alternatives and the picnic tables are built to last longer and require less maintenance than wood tables.
The HDPE Recycling project has been an extremely positive achievement for RBW through increasing sustainable practices and providing circularity that RBW customers want to see in the resource extraction and industrial sectors within Alberta and its surrounding provinces. The HDPE recycling along with HDPE material sent offsite for reconditioning reduces the environmental impact of these industries. Currently 16 tonnes of contaminated plastic are recycled per month into parking curbs, which is equivalent to 592.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions reduction per year. This project should serve as an example to Alberta’s industry as to how circularity can be established to reduce GHG emissions, promote sustainable practices and resource efficiency, and improve the local economy through producing Alberta-made recycled products, local job creation where individuals are gaining transferrable skills and knowledge in plastic recycling.
